Appologise for not reporting in more frequently but due to family issues my mind has been a bit of a rollercoaster. But I am working my way through more books to do with reggae music not to try and get there perception on what Rastafari means to the music genre and its relevance. I have been readint the book titled "Bass Culture" and have been finding it very informative. I now know to research and artist tcalled Prince Buster as he was the first Reggae artist to enclude Rastafari these in his music.

This week I have been researching into the faith of rasterfari a lot more. I have begun to finally get a grasp of this complex religion but I have to admit I am struggling with the language that is used in the texts that I am reading. The language used is either to formal of way too in formal, there seems to be no happy medium but im getting there slowly but surly. Next meeting with advisor on monday so hopefully she sees that I am progressing. Will also be starting my Literature review very soon so will update you on that as soon as.

Sorry for being not updating this in a couple of weeks but i went back up north for my October holidays to see my folks. This week I had my first dissertation meeting with my advisor. she has approved of my topic and has set me the task of defining Rastafarianism in one paragraph. To do this i have been reading "Rastafari? Rasta For You: Rastafarianism Explained" by Kelleyana Junique. Its a good book that seems to break down the faith into bite sized chunks. I have been taking notes as well, hopefully to be used as part of the main body of the dissertation and the literature review. My next meeting is on Monday so hopefully it will go well but i will keep u posted.

This week I completed and handed in my dissertation proposal. The title I have chosen is "Rastafarianism and its Influence on the Lyrics of Reggae Music". The project outline is:
Rastafarianism is a religion that is often clouded with mystery and misunderstanding. Although we recognise the somewhat stereotyped images that identify a Rasta we in the developed world know very little about the integrity of the religion and what we do know might also be a mistranslation of the truth. With Bob Marley being one of the most globally recognised follower of the faith there is a heavy link between Rastafarianism, Reggae music and the Caribbean island of Jamaica. Although this association between Reggae and Rasta is very much the norm there are very few academic works showing how the religion has influenced and developed the topics featured in the lyrics of Reggae music. In this piece of writing I aim to discus this very topic to see whether or not themes of Rastafarianism can be found in the lyrics of Reggae artists. I shall use a selection of books, academic texts and journals to try and gain a concrete understanding in the Rastafarian faith. By doing this I aim learn key Phrases and sayings that are strongly linked with the religion to see if they appear in any Reggae songs. I shall do this by studying lyrics from both past and present Reggae artists, Lyric sheets are now readily available online from various lyric sheet websites. Also by looking at Jamaica as a country I will be able to research into whether or not Rastafarianism had a strong enough following to have any impact into the mind set of the Reggae musician. At the end of my piece of work I shall form a conclusion based on the information gathered from my research.

Hey Hey
Well this week I havnt made as much progress with my Dissertation as I would have liked due to my books not arriving!!! hopefully they come soon so that i can begin reading about the art of being a Rasta. I have on the other hand been working on my proposal and i have just about got it finished! im pretty happy with it so far but will get it checked over at college 2morrow :)
Oh well thats about it for this week im afraid, hopefully more news next week

Hey guys! Well this week In Research and management class, to which this blog is an account of, we gained valuable information in to how best to title our dissertation. I have decided to focus my dissertation on Rastafarianism and its influence on the lyrics of Reggae music. I have been busy ordering relevant books needed to complete this piece of work and also researching various journals and online resources to use. My Bibliography is beginning to come together now so i should be able to present something at college next week.

First Entry!
Well first of all a big thanks to the fine people at Perth college for letting me back! This year Il be attempting to achieve my BA Degree in Popular Music.
Right so here goes....
after our delightfully enlightening induction day which consisted of us signing a lot of paper our first two timetabled days began the following week. Our first class titled Research and Management Skills we found out is where all of our big pieces of writing are going to take place. We were given a lot of deadlines for our main dissertation and Ensemble Projects. Being asked for the following week to have a good hard think about what we would like to research and do our dissertation on the only conclusion I have made so far is that there shall be a definite Reggae feel for the year to come.
Our next class called Digital Audio Production Multimedia was quite a confusing one... in fact I haven't really got a clue what is meant to be achieved in it so il leave that one till later on :P
Then was time for Ensemble class where we have decided to do a project based around Soul music and The Blues Brothers.... This should be a great project!
The following day we we all got enrolled in Blackboard, which was about as exciting as watching paint dry!
The following class was a lot more interesting. Presenting a Personal Portfolio sounds like it could be a good fun class, I look forward to getting paired up with a designer and getting there creative input on my project. Il report more on this class as it develops.
The final class on the day was our decision class where we got the choice of studying Music Production or Instrumental instruction. I chose Production as this class i feel has the potential to be very interesting and rewarding.
So yeah a new year and a whole lot of new work to be getting on with so tune in next week to here more about my life at perth college.
